Introduction

A lighting series inspired by jellyfish and ornamental forms, exploring how layered translucent structures can diffuse light while maintaining intricate, sculptural silhouettes. Designed to both stand and hang, the pieces balance softness, structure, and atmospheric glow.

This series explores the intersection of ornament and light diffusion through layered, structural forms. The design intends to balance softness and structure — creating lighting that feels both suspended and grounded.

The main themes focused on for this series were layered transparency and light as material, where illumination is part of the form, not just output.

Initial concepts

I began by sketching and modeling playful, organic shapes inspired by jellyfish and ornamental objects. Then, I built small-scale demo fin-loft lamps with them. These early explorations focused on curvature, repetition, and how layered elements could build volume.

Process

Structural iteration

Through iterative modeling and testing with laser-cut chipboard models, I developed a fin-like lofted structure that could interlock and create a stable yet lightweight form. Multiple variations were tested before selecting the final configuration.

Material & color exploration

The lamps were fabricated using laser-cut translucent matte acrylic. I selected two distinct colorways to explore how color impacts light diffusion and overall atmosphere, specifically using translucent matte acrylic to soften light while still allowing color to read clearly.

Light integration

The internal geometry was carefully modeled to comfortably house the bulb while maintaining even light distribution and avoiding harsh glare.

Dual functionality

The final design allows the light to function both as a standing object and as a suspended pendant, reinforcing its versatility in different environments.
